DD-WRT setup with FlashRouters Privacy app

You can set up a VPN on your router easily with FlashRouters.

DD-WRT firmware build requirements

The minimum required DD-WRT build version for the FlashRouters Privacy App is 02-10-2020-r42335. You can download the latest DD-WRT firmware build for your router model here.

How to Install the FlashRouters Privacy App

  1. Make sure the router is connected to the internet.
  2. Go to Administration > Commands, then copy and paste the following line:

    curl --silent --retry 3 https://api.flashroutersapp.com/api/v1.0/ddwrt/group/privacy/provider/NordVPN/install | sh
     
  3. Click Run Commands.
  4. You should see an Installation Successful message.

How to access the FlashRouters Privacy App

There are a few ways to access the FlashRouters Privacy App:

  1. Go to flashroutersapp.com
  2. In the DD-WRT settings, go to Status > MyPage
  3. Directly at http://192.168.11.1/MyPage.asp

How to connect to NordVPN

  1. Make sure you are on the Connect page in the FlashRouters App and enter your NordVPN account username and password.


     
  2. Select a NordVPN server:
     
    • You can scroll through the server dropdown list or type the desired server in the search bar.


       
    • Sort servers by country closest to you.


       
    • Sort servers by least loaded country.


       
  3. Click Connect.

Using Auto-Connect and Global Kill Switch

  1. Check the Auto-Connect box to make FlashRouter connect to NordVPN automatically upon reboot.
  2. Check Global Kill Switch to kill internet connection if the VPN disconnects unexpectedly.

Using the Options page

  1. Device Renaming


     
  2. Policy Routing for Devices:
    • Default - Connected to VPN
    • Kill-Switch - Kill Switch per device (Global Kill Switch must be disabled)
    • VPN-bypass - device connects directly to the ISP


       
  3. Policy Routing for Websites and Host IPs:

Simple Setup

DNS Servers: Enter any custom DNS servers from a trusted source like Google and OpenDNS, or the NordVPN DNS servers: 103.86.96.100 and 103.86.99.100.

Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz: View and/or edit your FlashRouter 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network SSID or Password. When you click Apply, your router will automatically reboot, and the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network information will be updated.
Wi-Fi 5.0 GHz: View and/or edit your FlashRouter 5.0 GHz Wi-Fi network SSID or Password. When you click Apply, your router will automatically reboot, and the 5.0 GHz Wi-Fi network information will be updated.

Note: If you have a tri-band router, another Wi-Fi 5 GHz section will be in this area.
Remember: After changing the Wi-Fi information, you will need to rejoin the network to regain access to your router and the FlashRouters App.

Back to DD-WRT: Click if you would like to change additional settings within the DD-WRT firmware GUI.
Configure VPN: All done? Move on to the VPN setup in the FlashRouters Privacy App. More information is available here.
